Connecticut Emissions Test Fee: Retest, Late Fee & Repair Scope

Budget Connecticut’s $20 emissions test, free same-station retest window, and $20 late fee before paying for repairs.

By How we research prices

Connecticut’s official emissions program lists a $20 test fee. If the vehicle fails, state law gives you one reinspection at the same official station within 60 consecutive days without another inspection fee. Missing the test deadline or the retest deadline can trigger the DMV’s separate $20 late fee. Those rules answer the test-cost question; they do not set the price of the repairs that make a vehicle pass.

What the $20 covers

The Connecticut DMV says the $20 fee is paid at the emissions test center and that payment methods vary by location. The test program covers eligible gasoline and diesel vehicles, with exemptions for categories such as full electric vehicles and some newer vehicles. Confirm the vehicle’s due date and test eligibility before booking.

The free retest is narrower than “free repairs.” The Connecticut statute describes one reinspection at the same official station after the vehicle is repaired, within 60 days. A different station, a late return, or a second retest can create a new inspection charge. Keep the failed report and repair documentation.

The fee that surprises owners

The DMV lists a $20 emissions late fee when a test is more than 30 days overdue, when a failed vehicle is not retested within 60 days, or when an extension expires. That is a state fee, separate from diagnosis, parts, labor, and any station charge allowed for a later inspection.

Do not approve a repair because the test fee is small. Ask the repairer to identify the diagnostic code, the readiness-monitor status, the repair needed, and whether the station can perform the free retest. The useful budget is $20 test + repair quote + $0 same-station retest within the window, with $20 added if the deadline is missed.

The state rules are current checks, not a promise that every vehicle passes after one repair. Save the date, station, receipt, failed report, and retest deadline.
