Differential fluid service: compare axle count, fluid, and inspection scope
How to compare differential-service quotes by axle count, gear-oil specification, seals, inspection, and vehicle-specific scheduling.
Differential service is easy to underquote because “the differential” may mean one rear axle, front and rear units, or an integrated transaxle. Ask the shop to name each housing, the fluid specification and quantity, whether a gasket or seal is included, and what inspection follows draining. On a limited-slip or electronically controlled unit, additives and procedures can be specific to the vehicle.
Toyota’s 2026 Land Cruiser owner data lists separate front and rear differential capacities and specifies Toyota Genuine Differential Gear Oil LT 75W-85 GL-5 or an equivalent matching quality. Toyota’s owner-manual data is a primary, model-specific reference; it does not authorize that oil in another vehicle or establish a retail price.
Honda’s 2021 Ridgeline Maintenance Minder lists rear differential-fluid replacement as item 6 and gives more frequent conditions for mountain driving or trailer towing. Honda’s maintenance document supports checking use conditions and axle configuration. It is not a universal interval.
Make the quote itemized
| Scope line | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Axle count | Front, rear, or both; exact housing identified |
| Gear oil | Viscosity, API/GL rating, OEM approval, additive requirement |
| Quantity | Reference capacity and how level is set at the fill opening |
| Hardware | Gasket, crush washer, drain/fill plugs, and seal inspection |
| Inspection | Metal debris, leaks, breather, axle seals, and bearing noise |
| Disposal | Collection and compliant handling of used gear oil |
Do not treat a low fluid level or metallic debris as routine. It may indicate a leak or internal wear that needs diagnosis. A fluid change cannot promise to cure gear whine, clunking, or bearing damage. Ask the shop to photograph debris or identify the leak location and price any repair separately.
Walmart’s posted transmission-fluid price does not establish a differential-service price. Its general-maintenance page lists a $49.88 transmission fluid exchange excluding parts, showing why one fluid service line cannot be repurposed for another component. Compare the exact operation and provider instead of borrowing a nearby number.
Ask whether the vehicle has a limited-slip differential, clutch pack, or electronically controlled coupling. Those features may require an additive or a special fluid, and a generic gear-oil substitution can create noise or damage. The technician should inspect the fill plug before draining when access is tight; an inability to refill is a scope risk worth identifying up front. A final invoice that records fluid quantity and any metal on the magnet is more useful than a package name because it preserves evidence for the next noise or leak diagnosis.
Use the vehicle manual as the schedule
A manufacturer may specify time, mileage, severe use, or no routine change for a particular unit. Confirm whether towing, water crossings, dirt roads, or high load changes the schedule. Record mileage, date, fluid brand and specification, axle serviced, and findings. If a shop offers a front-and-rear package, verify both housings are actually included. A good quote makes axle count visible before a wrench is turned.
