Updated

An oil change should be priced for the oil specification and quantity your vehicle requires. As one U.S. provider example, Walmart’s published packages ranged from $28.88 to $68.88 when checked September 7, 2026. That is a provider menu, not a national average or a confirmed out-the-door price for your car.

Published oil-change service prices

Walmart package Displayed price
Pit Crew conventional $28.88
Standard featured oil $36.88
Quaker State synthetic $52.88
Full-synthetic $62.88
Premium synthetic $68.88

Walmart’s oil-change service page says lube services include up to five quarts, an oil filter, and chassis lubrication where applicable. Additional oil costs extra; location and non-featured oil can affect pricing. These selected packages are not the entire menu. No store or appointment was selected for this comparison, and taxes and vehicle-specific extras are not established by the displayed figures.

A cheaper package is useful only if it meets the vehicle’s requirements. A package name such as “high mileage” does not replace the oil specification in the owner’s manual.

What changes the final oil-change bill?

Ask the provider to price the service using the year, make, model, and engine. Then confirm these items:

Item Question to ask
Oil specification Does the quoted oil meet the manufacturer’s requirement?
Quantity How many quarts are needed, how many are included, and what is the extra-quart charge?
Filter Is the required filter included or subject to an extra charge?
Access Is any additional access labor included in the estimate?
Fees and taxes What is the total after disposal or shop fees and applicable tax?
Coupon Does the offer apply to this oil, vehicle, location, and service date?

Ask about extras before the work starts. Keep optional filters or fluid services separate from the oil change so the comparison does not mix different purchases.

Compare a package with an all-in quote

Hypothetical example: one shop quotes a $60 package, then adds one extra quart at $10 and a $5 fee. Its subtotal is $75 before tax. Another shop quotes $73 before tax for the required oil quantity, filter, and fees together.

On those invented inputs, the $73 quote is $2 lower for the same scope even though its starting price looks higher. If the second quote omits the extra quart, the comparison is incomplete. Write down the included quantity instead of assuming “oil change” means the same thing at every provider.

For several vehicles, compare each vehicle separately. Different engines can need different quantities and specifications even when both are offered the same named package.

Do you need synthetic oil or a shorter service interval?

Use the maintenance schedule and oil specification for the exact vehicle. Ask the shop to point to the relevant requirement when recommending a different oil or service interval. Price alone cannot establish whether a product is suitable.

If the shop suggests other work, ask whether the recommendation comes from the maintenance schedule, a measured inspection finding, or an optional preference. The cabin air filter guide and transmission fluid service guide help keep separate services distinct.

What should the receipt record?

Keep the date, mileage, oil specification and quantity, filter, and final total with your service records. If the approved amount changes, ask for the additional work and price before authorizing it. A record with specific items is more useful for future comparisons than one line for a service package.

Correction and source notes

The September 7, 2026 correction removed unsupported general price claims and purported personal experience. The menu above is a dated provider example; the two-shop comparison is hypothetical arithmetic. Publication does not imply vehicle-specific advice or independent testing. See our methodology.
