U-Haul’s box catalog lists standard starting prices of $1.39 for small, $2.04 for medium, $2.48 for large, and $3.49 for extra-large boxes. A book box is $1.50. Read the catalog and the box-size guide.

The guide’s dimensions explain why box size is a weight decision as well as a price decision. Count dense books and tools separately from light linens, then compare pickup and delivery at checkout.

A 20-box mix of eight small, eight medium, and four large boxes costs $37.36 (8 × $1.39 + 8 × $2.04 + 4 × $2.48). U-Haul’s 20-medium bundle is $40.80, or $2.04 each. The bundle is useful when the contents are similar; a mixed cart can fit a household better.

Use small cartons for dense books and tools, medium for mixed rooms, and large for light linens and clothing. Count specialty cartons separately. U-Haul says standard shipping is free on qualifying $50 orders in the contiguous United States, while same-day delivery fees are calculated at checkout. Prices were checked September 8, 2026.

U-Haul’s dimensions explain why the cheapest box is not always the right one. Count by contents first, then compare single and bundle prices. Keep the pickup location and delivery fee with the order because the catalog’s “as low as” price is not an out-the-door promise.

For a small apartment, the buying decision is often whether to mix cartons or accept a bundle. The mixed 20-box worksheet above is $3.44 below the $40.80 medium bundle, but it also gives fewer medium cartons for bulky kitchen items. Use the room inventory, not the headline unit price: books and tools can make a large carton unsafe to lift, while comforters waste space in small cartons. Confirm stock and the final delivery charge at the selected store before paying.
