A bathroom refresh and a layout-changing reconstruction need separate budgets. Define whether the toilet, shower, and vanity stay in their current locations before comparing contractor totals.
Price evidence and its limits
HomeGuide’s cost guide, dated June 20, 2025, lists $3,500–$7,500 for its minor-renovation category and $5,300–$15,000 for its partial-remodel category, based on a bathroom of 35–50 square feet. These are the publisher’s U.S. consumer-guide estimates, checked September 7, 2026; they are not local bids or a price survey conducted by this site. The source date is not the date every underlying project was priced. Minor work is described as updating surfaces, vanity, and fixtures; partial remodeling replaces selected elements. A structural or layout-changing project needs its own scope.
Define the work in the quote
Fixtures and layout
Use a plan showing the selected fixtures, their dimensions, and any plumbing relocation. Distinguish fixture purchase allowances from delivery, installation, and connection work.
Shower assembly
Ask for the proposed waterproofing system and its installation requirements, substrate preparation, tile areas, drainage details, and testing. Specify shelves, niches, glass, and accessibility features in the base scope or as alternatives.
Room completion
Identify ventilation, lighting, electrical work, flooring, drywall, trim, painting, and disposal. Assign responsibility for permits and inspections rather than assuming they are included in a general remodeling charge.
Make allowances visible before choosing finishes
An allowance is a placeholder in the contract, not proof that the fixtures shown in a showroom are included. List each allowance beside the selected product and ask how price differences, delivery, and installation changes are handled. Resolve shower glass dimensions and tile details before ordering. Keep a separate schedule for owner-supplied items so missing deliveries do not become unexplained delays.
The key question before authorizing work
Ask: Can you price this plan with the selected fixtures and finishes, and list every allowance and exclusion?
