A drywall patch is not necessarily a finished, painted wall. Define the damaged area and the cause before comparing a small repair with removal and replacement across a room.
Price evidence and its limits
HomeGuide’s cost guide, dated October 20, 2025, lists $300–$500 for small holes under four inches and $500–$800 or more for larger holes requiring new drywall. These are the publisher’s U.S. consumer-guide estimates, checked September 7, 2026; they are not local bids or a price survey conducted by this site. The source date is not the date every underlying project was priced. The guide also discusses contractor minimum charges. Confirm whether texture, primer, and painting are included rather than adding a published minimum fee twice.
Define the work in the quote
Cause and extent
Ask whether the quoted work includes only cosmetic repair or also investigation of recurring cracks or water damage. Identify the person responsible for correcting the cause before closing the wall.
Patch specification
Record patch dimensions, board type and thickness, backing, joint treatment, and texture. Ask how the repair will meet any applicable assembly requirements.
Paint and protection
Specify dust protection, furniture movement, cleanup, priming, and the boundaries of repainting. A localized touch-up and painting an entire wall are separate finish scopes.
Define what finished means
A patched opening, a textured wall, and a painted room are three different completion points. Ask whether the repair stops at sanding, includes matching the existing texture, or includes primer and paint over a defined area. Photograph the agreed boundaries. If water caused the damage, document who will confirm the source has been corrected before the surface is closed.
The key question before authorizing work
Ask: Will this price leave a completed painted surface, and exactly how much wall or ceiling will be refinished?
