San Diego Home EV Charger Permit Fee: The Published $264.25 Inspection

Budget San Diego’s published single-dwelling EV charging-system inspection fee and identify electrical work that can add separate charges.

By How we research prices

San Diego’s Information Bulletin 187 lists $264.25 per EV charging system for a single dwelling, duplex, or townhouse. The city describes this as an inspection fee for the charging system; it is not the cost of the charger, wiring, panel work, trenching, or electrician labor. Read the city’s EV charging permit bulletin.

One listed charging system therefore starts with a $264.25 municipal line. Two systems use 2 × $264.25 = $528.50 before any additional electrical or permit work. The bulletin says other alterations can be subject to other fees.

Match the property and scope

The fee line is for a single dwelling, duplex, or townhouse. A multifamily or nonresidential project should not automatically use the same number. Ask the installer to identify whether the filing is for the charging system alone or includes panel, service, trench, conduit, disconnect, or other alterations.

The city’s permit guidance explains that project-specific permits and inspections can vary by scope. Check San Diego’s permit guidance. The $264.25 line does not price a 240-volt circuit or a panel upgrade.

Keep charger and electrical work separate

A quote can contain at least three different money decisions: the charging equipment, electrical installation, and city fee. San Diego’s bulletin supports only the inspection line. A charger installed near an existing panel may have a different electrician scope from one requiring a long conduit run or service capacity change.

Ask for the permit number, charger count, property type, inspection fee, and any additional alteration permits. If the installer includes “permit” in a package price, request the city fee receipt or line item so you can compare the municipal amount with labor and materials.

Booking decision

For a single eligible dwelling, duplex, or townhouse charging system, use $264.25 as the published city inspection input. For two systems, use $528.50. Confirm the current bulletin, property classification, and extra electrical permits before work starts; the inspection line is a budget component rather than an installed EV-charger price.
