Compare rooftop solar cost evidence, system size, installation scope, and purchase terms. Check the price period and incentive assumptions before budgeting.

A rooftop solar proposal needs a defined system, installation scope, and purchase arrangement. Compare the gross cash price before incentives, and review financing or lease terms as a separate decision.

Price evidence and its limits

Historical marketplace evidence: EnergySage’s September 3, 2025 report records a $2.48-per-watt median for solar in the first half of 2025, based on shoppers and quotes on its U.S. marketplace. It is a platform-specific historical benchmark, not a September 2026 offer or a representative survey of every installed system. Battery storage is reported separately. EnergySage’s H1 2025 report release.

Ask every bidder for the gross cash price and the same capacity basis. Do not compare a financed total, a post-incentive number, and a cash installation number as if they were equivalent.

Define the work in the quote

System and site

Record panel and inverter models, system capacity, layout, roof condition, and any battery. Ask whether reroofing, structural work, or electrical changes are included.

Production assumptions

Request the basis for estimated generation, including shading, orientation, and losses. Have any bill-savings projection identify the utility tariff and compensation assumptions used.

Contract boundaries

List permits, utility interconnection, monitoring, commissioning, warranties, and roof-penetration responsibility. For financing or leases, review the total payment obligation and transfer terms rather than only the monthly payment.

Federal credit correction for new installations

The IRS Form 5695 instructions end the residential clean energy credit for expenditures after December 31, 2025; installation completion controls when costs are treated as paid. A 2025 deposit does not automatically qualify a system completed in 2026. Compare gross installation prices and separately verify any state or utility benefit. Model savings using the actual tariff, production assumptions, financing terms, and maintenance obligations.

The key question before authorizing work

Ask: What is the complete cash price before incentives, and what assumptions support generation and bill-savings projections?
