A water-heater replacement price should describe the model and the work needed to install it at the existing location. Moving the heater or changing fuel or heater type requires a separate scope.

Price evidence and its limits

HomeGuide’s cost guide, dated January 2, 2026, lists $600–$3,100 installed for a standard 40–50-gallon tank heater, before incentives or rebates. These are the publisher’s U.S. consumer-guide estimates, checked September 7, 2026; they are not local bids or a price survey conducted by this site. The source date is not the date every underlying project was priced. Compare the fuel, model, access, and connection work. The installed range already includes equipment; adding the unit price again would double-count it.

Define the work in the quote

Equipment selection

Record capacity, fuel or power type, model, and warranty. Ask how the selection fits the household demand and the available installation space.

Connections

List plumbing, valves, electrical or fuel connections, venting where applicable, drainage, and other work specified for the installation. Ask which existing components are suitable for reuse.

Access and completion

Include removal, delivery, disposal, permits, commissioning, and repairs to finishes. Separate emergency dispatch or difficult access from the equipment charge.

Ask for the gross total and specific alternatives

Get a complete installed cash price before applying any claimed discount or rebate. Price relocation or conversion as explicit alternatives to a replacement at the current location. Ask whether the warranty covers the equipment, labor, or both and who handles a claim. Keep the model, installation record, startup documentation, and maintenance instructions together for future service.

The key question before authorizing work

Ask: What is the complete installed total for this model, including connection changes, removal, permits, and testing?
