Siding replacement needs a measured wall scope and a plan for the layers behind the visible finish. Replacing cladding alone and rebuilding damaged wall sections are not equivalent bids.

Price evidence and its limits

HomeGuide’s cost guide, dated October 29, 2025, lists $4–$13 per square foot installed for siding and lists old-siding removal separately at $0.70–$2 per square foot. These are the publisher’s U.S. consumer-guide estimates, checked September 7, 2026; they are not local bids or a price survey conducted by this site. The source date is not the date every underlying project was priced. Use measured siding area rather than assuming the home floor area equals exterior wall area. Repairs behind the siding need separate authorization.

Define the work in the quote

Areas and materials

Identify elevations, measured wall area, selected product, trim, corners, soffits, and fascia. List excluded walls and openings so material quantities can be compared.

Removal and weather details

Specify tear-off, disposal, proposed weather barrier, flashing, and treatment of windows, doors, and penetrations. Ask how concealed sheathing or framing damage will be evaluated.

Finish and changes

Include access equipment, painting if needed for the selected system, fixture removal and refitting, and cleanup. Set an approval process and measurement basis for hidden repairs.

Quote the complete wall finish

Have each bid identify the siding product, measured coverage, trim, openings, weather-resistive layers, flashing, and removal. Ask what inspection occurs after old siding is removed and how concealed repairs are authorized. Paint, gutters, fixtures, and landscaping protection may need their own scope. A rate based on actual wall surface should not be treated as a rate per square foot of indoor living area.

The key question before authorizing work

Ask: Does the price include removal, flashing and weather-barrier work, trim, and any required finishing?
